I have two quick questions. I have a guy wanting to trade me a glock for one of my rifles, he says the glock is not registered to him. So how can I find out who the gun is registered to and can I get it registered in my name???

Unless you live in one of the Communist states. Cal. NY. NJ. Etc... they are not registered.

Owtlaw is exactly right. Now, if you just want to find out if the firearm is not stolen, most PDs or SOs will run the serial number for you and give you a yes or no answer.

The only info on the firearm if it not in a must-register state would be the last FFL to have had it, and that info is only in the possession of the BATF.

Cool, well I live in tennesse so were not communist yet. Basically I want to find out if its legal with no strings attached i.e. murder weapon, stolen. I am just leary about trying to find out info on it because if it is tainted I don't want them to be thinkin it's mine :cry:

You're doing the right thing -- just ask your local LEO and they'll help out. Be sure to write down what they say and WHO you spoke with, along with the time/date of the call. Don't know what they call it in Tennessee, here in NM we call it "CYA"!

I'm not sure if it'll work in TN, but here in Florida we go online to FDLE and check for stolen guns via the serial number :i:

Alright so I will be trading tomorrow. So what happens in the event that I call my LEO and for some reason the gun is not legit? I know the guy will let me trade back, but will johnny law dog be looking for me or what? I just get a little nervous about dealing with weapons that I didn't buy from a gun dealer.

All that a dealer will do is get LE to run it through the computer. If you can get your local LE to do it you're just as good.

The suggestion is to ask LEO to run the S/N *before* money changes hands so you purchase what you reasonably believe to be a clean gun. If you were to purchase it and then find out it's stolen, the onus would be on you. Yes, you could lose it, and yes you could be charged with possession of stolen property.
