Default My own home made shooting range

I have started making my own shooting range, and its coming along awesome so I thought I would share. My old boss who is more like family, lives 3 miles from me and is giving me full access to the 16 acres of woods behind his house to make a range. He told me long as I dont shoot towards the house (duh) I could do whatever I wanted! (:

So I scoped out an area where I could have the longest straight shot possible without any big trees in the way, and got to work. I cut down 15-20 small trees, cut out a whole lot of briars, bushes, and weeds, and moved lots of fallen trees/branches. So far I have about 100 yards by 20-25 feet wide cleared out, with a lot more room to extend. I am a lineman, and in my line of work I have access to all the steel plates/pieces I could want, so I have quite a collection. So far I have hung 2 of these, just to see how my rig would work. It worked awesome, so I will be hanging a lot more. Here are some pics of what I have done, in just 3-4 hours of working. I will be working on it every sunday on my days off, so I will keep posting more pics along the way!

Heres the entrance. We moved a large pile of rocks and several years worth of leaves.

This is the view from the shooting spot. Doesnt look like much yet, but you can see how much I have cleared out, and how far I have to shoot. I still need to move the leaves and use the weedwacker, but that will all get done.

    Walking downrange.

Trial steel targets. About 30 yards from shooting area.

If you know how many guns you have, you dont have enough!!

Gun control is being able to hit your target, over and over!

If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

The view past the hanging steel targets.

I put a bunch more spinner/resetting targets further downrange, but didnt take pics.

First time trying out the targets

Here is the end result of the steel targets. Next time I will bolt 2 black ones, and 3 gray ones together, I dont think they will get dented that way.

Looks like your doing a fine job on your range there. Sure wish I could set one up somewhere. Good luck on your project.

You know, Central CT isn't far from Eastern CT. I think I need to come "inspect" that range myself, to make sure everything is safe.

Looks like an excellent project. Would love to have the acreage someday to do that myself.

    Good job!

I've yet to start on one myself, but hope to later this summer.

Great range Billy. It's nice to have your own place to play.
I got tired of the lazy SOB's at my local gun range & didn't join this year. Everybody wants to shoot, but only a few want to do any work to improve or maintain the place. We tried to have some different matches, but only a handfull of people ever showed up. Its a a good place & there is a couple of pistol ranges & a 200 yd rifle range.
I've spent the last two years building a range at my place in the country. Because of the trees & neighbors, I can only get 400 yds for the rifles. I have several targets in the trees out to 150 yds & mostly shoot my .22 LR's there. I have also built a falling plate rack for the pistol stuff & can shoot out to 35 yds. I add steel & paper targets as I need them & can move things around when I want to.
