Question Can I shoot guns in my backyard in a neighborhood ?

I live in a suburb neighborhood in Franklin, Tennessee. I was wondering if there are any laws against shooting in my backyard? There are no houses that back up to mine, and the only thing back there is a small forest and a creek. We also have an extremely crazy, anti-gun person that is the self-proclaimed leader of the neighborhood and is in charge of some sort of homeowners type thing. So if I do shoot in my backyard will I get fined or arrested?

Probably you can't. Check with LE to be sure
Here in rural WA you have to have so many acres before you can shoot

If you are rural call the Sheriff if you are in a city, call the city cops

Greg is right. I hesitate to say "all" but this is one of those times where I'd be willing to bet that ALL cities ban firing of guns within city limits. Even pellet guns and BB guns. Even slingshots. Also, there are some counties which ban firing of guns anywhere in the county, even if there is nobody around for miles.

where i m at there are thousands of acres of woods backed up to my house but I still live in a metro county so it's illegal to discharge a firearm, not saying i dont since i have a range in my backyard just saying i can be fined for it

I would also check with your state and local laws on line. I'm sure you can look them up by going to your states web site. Like Greg and Wag said you must either OWN the needed predetermined land space or its a city ban on firing of firearms within city limits. But you will not know unless you ask the sheriff / cops or a city / state offical, or even ask a local / state firearm forum. Each State has their own laws regarding this.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one."

I have two acres of land in my place and I live in a rural area, however, because of the acreage and the fact that is also concidered a residential area I'm not suposed to shoot. We can however shoot to defend our live stock. Lots of foxes and the ocational bear and panter(in wich case you better shoot to scare and not to kill or you will need a really good reazon to justifie killing any of the last two mentioned). Check for your local ordinances. According to what you just described looks like most likely you wont be able to shoot there but you must check your local ordinances first, you never know.
