Default Anyone know if you can carry on a greyhound bus or on amtrak?

Anyone know if you can legally carry on a greyhound bus or on amtrak train?

I have my CCW and was thinking about using one of these methods of transport to go in-state to another city.

Anyone know where I could find something like this out?

The Senate just passed a bil allowing for gun to be checked in baggage on Amtrak just as it is on an airplane, but I do not know when it takes effect.

Regarding carrying on a bus, I believe it is buried in here, but I cannot find it:

I have read that you can check your gun just as you do with an airline, but again, I scanned this and could not find the reference.

You cannot carry a firearm on Amtrak, there are big giant signs posted about it.

As for greyhound, you should probably call their offices and ask what their policy is about it, since it's a private company that might not even be subject to the DoT but definitely is not subject to the FAA, and IIRC the FAA is the one with the policy about carry, not the DoT.

Edit to Add: You cannot have a firearm on a greyhound bus, in luggage. Doesn't say anything about on your persons, but I assume the policy extends to on your persons.

I just looked at both of their websites. They both say that it is prohibited.

    Disappointing.

    As Trocisp said, call them.

There may be a way to check them in your baggage so you have them at your destination.

Haven't yet found anything specific on Greyhound but I know they won't let you. If you do a dogpile.com search you'll find info on several specific states (UT, NC, TN, etc), all of which say "No Go Joe".

greyhound will not allow a gun to be transported by them at all. They have a policy against it. About a month ago I was going greyhound to go help a friend move back. (I drove the u-haul back) And I looked into it cause I wanted to take my pistol with me. But I had to leave it at home.

It works differently from state to state, I believe.

In Oregon, for example, the state determines where individuals can carry and where they can't. Our public transportation says no, you can't carry on the train, or bus, but state law says if you have a license all they can do is ask you to leave, provided they know you have the gun.

Actually public transportation is where you might have need for the gun. Thats where you have contact with strangers and encounter gang-bangers and other nuts. In my state I will carry, but no one will know it and if I was asked to leave I would immediately do as requested.

So you would do well to find out exactly how the gun laws work in your home state and the cities that you will be traveling to. If traveling across state lines you have a whole different kind of problem and you best know the rules of the states you will be passing through.

    Greyhound list:

Amtrak list, I don't think it has been updated though. It still says no on guns, checked or baggage:

The US Senate Amendment must now be voted on by the US House and signed by the President before it can take effect.
The difference between a Socialist and a Communist is that the Socialist doesn't have all the guns yet.
