Default Home Defense With Your 22 Caliber

For many the trail gun is all they can afford and own so its that or nothing. Or the 22 rifle that was a hand me down from relatives.

Thats all I had for several years. A Browning semi-auto rifle that had a tube magazine. But in pinch it could pump out a lot of rounds quickly and make a tight pattern.

Is the 22 caliber your current home defense weapon? Handgun or rifle?

    Think you are well protected?

A lot of home invasions have been stopped by 22's. It doesn't take a kill to stop a thug. Just knowing they were shot is sometimes enough to make them reconsider.

It sure is better than nothing. I know I can pump alot of rounds accurately into a target with my 22s.

That being said, since I have other guns, I would never rely on a 22 for my personal protection. At least I wouldn't do that on purpose.

You are right on the money. A good Ruger 22 semi-auto is a lethal piece that will put all ten rounds in darn near the same hole. A serious deterrent, in my opinion.

The gun of choice for custom slaughter cattle on your farm butchers is a .22 rifle. One round in the right spot will make a 1200 pound steer literally drop dead.

Before I got my Blackhawk .357 my nightstand gun was the Single Six loaded with .22WMR hollow points. Would you want to get shot with one?

I chronoed 22 ammo and the WMR out of a 6 1/2" barreled single six is still way more powerful than a 22 long rifle out of a Ruger 10/22.

If it's all you have, by all means, use it. Personally, I don't want to ever get shot with a .22 and there are plenty of stories of people dieing from a .22 bullet.

I agree that's it's better than no gun although I would not recommend it as a primary home defense purchase. If that is your situation then make certain that you use the best Stingers that you can get because that will definitely increase the effectiveness of a 22LR. Also for those who have convertible 22 revolvers (particularly the Ruger Single Six) by all means use the 22 mag cylinder, as that will increase effective tremendously and bring you closer to what a 380 or a low end 38 Special does from a ballistic standpoint. Semi autos are also a big plus as they obviously increase your rate of fire, collectively allowing you to deposit more total energy and trauma to the intruder.

Additional thoughts: Single shot rifles, think again, they're not a very good idea (but still better than nothing). Semi auto carbines with 10 or more round capacities are a much better choice. Repeating bolt actions like a Marlin 25 with a 7 round detachable mag or similar are so so choices when it comes to 22's for defense, but again better than nothing and better than single shots. Lever actions carbines and pump actions will come in a little ahead of bolt actions and a little behind semi autos and are not a bad option as far a 22's go. In summary: High capacity semi auto 22's whether handgun, carbine or full length rifle or obviously better than slower loading (slower rate of fire) 22's with single shots being the worst. Remember to use stinger or other max performance 22 hollow points for max advantage and always convert to 22 mag when that capability exists.
