    Default Pellet rifle efective range

What is the effective range of a 1,000 fps .177 pellet gun? I have been a little let down by the accuracy of mine but I have been shooting at 25yrds and I am beginning to think that is the pushing the max.

    Effective for what? Hunting? Targets?

I shoot mine at the range at 25 and 50 yards. It is a 1000 fps model from Gamo. I think that with the right pellet, you should have an effective squirrel hunting range of about 50 yards. If someone chrono's one, that will help to determine effective range better.

For target shooting, I have taken mine out to 100 yards, but there is a he!! of an arc needed to reach that range, and any slight lateral breeze throws it off big time.

It just seems to group loosely at 25'yds and sometimes with certain shooting angles, I cant even get enough elevation out of the rear sight to get the POI up to the POA.

I have a .177 air pistol and it can reliably take out rats at 25 yards. They may suffer but they rarely get away. At ten yards I can put it in their eye. Are you sure you are getting enough pressure? Chrono it if you can. Doesn't sound like 1000 fps to me - more like half that.

I used to take coons out of our bird feeders in the back yard at about 40 yards when I was a kid.

If you cant get enough elevation you can always "Kentucky windage" it.

Not something I would do while killing critters, but it can be fun when plinking.

Definitely chrono that gun. Also, what weight pellet are you shooting? You may need to try a different pellet just like ammo in a rifle. Ask BangBang what changing the pellet can do for ya.

Estimated holdover. The story goes back to Colonial times, when Kentucky windage was used to dispatch your relatives from far away.

Ive chrono'ed it already, I don't remember exactly what it was but it was pretty close. It does this with crossman, beeman, and gamo pellets of all different weights.
